Guide to Naval & maritime museums in the UK
Latest revision: 11 September 1995
This file has 2 parts. The first part lists 179 Naval and other maritime
museums in England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland (Ulster) and the
offshore islands. Naval museums include Royal Marines (RM) & Fleet Air
Arm (FAA) collections. Civil maritime sites include Royal National
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), local and national museums with collections
related to fisheries, trade, shipbuilding, inland waterways, Customs &
Excise, maritime exploration and other nautical interests. The list is
not exhaustive: many coastal towns have museums with some material
related to fishing and the sea.
The second part of this file is a list of 188 historic vessels. Vessels
are listed if they are museum-ships in their own right, or are part of
the collection of one or other of the museums listed in part 1, but of
course vessels may move to different locations at any time. This list of
historic vessels is by no means exhaustive. It lists a few of many old
vessels owned by Trusts and open to the public.
Further information about some British historic vessels might be
obtained from: The Maritime Trust (2 Greenwich Church St., London SE10
9BG), the National Historic Ship Committee (c/o the National Maritime
Museum at Greenwich), the 40+ Fishing Boat Association of the British
Isles (c/o Mr M. Smylie, Bron Menai Cottage, Dwyran, Anglesey LL61 6BJ,
Wales, or Mr M. Craine, Hillcrest, 63 Birchill Crescent, Onchan, Isle of
Man IM3 3DA), or the North of England Museums Service (House of
Recovery, Bath Lane, Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE4 5SQ). The Cornwall Maritime
Museum has a database of old Cornish vessels. The International Register
of Historic Ships, by Norman J Brower, is now in its 2nd edition
(Anthony Nelson: Oswestry: 1993: ISBN 0-904614-46-8 paperback or
0-904614-50-6 hardback).
Symbols and abbreviations:
The symbols * and ** following museum names indicate that over 10,000 or
over 100,000 people visit each year, respectively. This gives a rough
guide to the importance of a museum, except that one or two major
museums have not published visitor figures, and obviously the ratings
will be biased in favour of museums within major centres of population.
ARC: Archives & Reserve Collection held.
BA: By appointment.
BH: Bank Holidays (ie Public Holidays).
GV/SE: Telephone line for booking Group Visits/info on Special Events
AH: ditto, for after-hours 'phone calls
Lib: Library attached.
PoW: Prisoner of War (usually Napoleonic period).
RC: Recent Confirmation by the museum, of details. Several have not
replied to requests for up-to-date information. We are most
grateful to those who did confirm, often with generous amounts
of information, catalogues, guides and brochures.
Telephone & Fax numbers:
The numbers given here are in the UK format of (Area Code)+number, where
the area code begins with a zero. When dialling from outside the UK use
prefix +44 and omit the initial zero. Thus, to 'phone Aberdeen Maritime
Museum from outside the UK dial +44 1224 585788.
Electronic mail (e-mail) and WWW access:
A very few museums now have access via computer, and these have their
addresses or URLs listed under "Computer".
Opening days:
These are liable to change at short notice. Of those that are normally
open "Daily", even these will close over the Christmas holiday period,
and maybe on other public holidays also, such as Easter. Others may
specifically open briefly during the Easter holiday weekend. Smaller
museums, manned by a few volunteers, will often open for only 2 - 3
hours on the days listed as "open". We cannot be specific about opening
hours, as these are too variable. It would be foolish to make a long
journey to any museum without first confirming its opening times.
Reference and Guide Books:
The initial source of names for this list was the Museums Yearbook
1995/96, published by The Museums Association, 42 Clerkenwell Close,
London EC1R 0PA. It is invaluable for administrative data, and we are
grateful to the MA for providing us with a copy. It gives little detail
about the collections and is not a guide book. Some of the museums in
this list are not in the Yearbook. For those visiting a limited area of
Britain we would recommend, as a guide book, one of the volumes in the
series: "Exploring Museums", printed by HMSO for the Museums Association
and the Museums & Galleries Commission between 1989-93. These volumes
are each priced at 9.95 UK Pounds and give detailed descriptions of the
exhibits in all the main museums within each area of the UK, with short
summaries of the smaller ones. It is a recent series, but unfortunately
with 10 volumes to cover the whole UK, buying a whole set would be
expensive! There were 3 guides specifically to British maritime
collections, but all now seen to be out of print. They could perhaps be
obtained from dealers in nautical books.
National Maritime Museum Guide to Maritime Britain, by Keith Wheatley
(Webb & Bower: Exeter: 1990. ISBN 0-86350-268-7). This useful book
works its way around the coast of Britain, giving brief information
on every location of maritime interest, and some general area
history. Inland sites are ignored.
Britain's Maritime Heritage, by Veryan Heal (Conway Maritime Press:
London: 1988. ISBN 0-85177-474-1). An alphabetical list of towns
where there are maritime collections, with short descriptions of the
exhibits, illustrations and useful lists of auxiliary information,
now unfortunately getting out of date in places.
A Heritage of Ships, by Alexander McKee (Souvenir Press: London: 1988.
ISBN 0-285-628550). Concentrates on sites with important ships,
which are given a fuller description and history than in the other
two books. Useful supplementary information, but again is getting
out of date in some details.
Shire Publications Ltd issue a series of small books on selected topics:
eg: "Anchors", "East Coast Shipping", "Ships' Figureheads", "Tugs &
Towage" etc. These inexpensive little books usually include a reading
list and list of places to visit, but unfortunately even the most recent
editions may be 10 or more years out of date.
Although much effort has been made to achieve accuracy, there is no
guarantee that this list is free of errors, and details may change at
short notice. Please keep us informed of any corrections, additions or
other necessary changes. Happy visiting!
